The Opportunity

Redeeming the time—Ephesians 5:16

Two little words are found in the Greek version here-ton kairon. They are translated in the revised version, “Buying up for yourselves the opportunity.” The two words ton kairon mean, literally, the opportunity.

They do not refer to time in general, but to a special point in time, a juncture, a crisis. They refer to a moment full of possibilities quickly passing by, which we must seize and make the best of before it has passed away.

It is intimated that there are not many such moments of opportunity, because the days are evil. These moments are like flowers which appear here and there in the barren desert: pluck them while you can. Or they are like a business opportunity which comes once in a lifetime; buy it up while you have the chance. Be spiritually alert; be not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is (v. 16). Walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise (v. 15), buying up for yourselves the opportunity.

Sometimes it is a moment of time to be saved; sometimes a soul to be led to Christ; sometimes it is an occasion for love; sometimes for patience; sometimes for victory over temptation and sin. Let us redeem it.

Counseling At The Supermarket

Jonathan Cahnby Jonathan Cahn

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:16

I was walking in a supermarket once, about midnight. As I passed the payphone, it rang. I had nothing to lose so I picked it up and said hello. They said, “Is this the counseling center?” I replied, “No this is Jonathan, but maybe I can help.” They started sharing with me and I was able to counsel them to trust Messiah. Scripture teaches us to make the most of every opportunity. There’s people who need salvation everywhere. Be ready to be interrupted and do His will. When you’re busy doing your own thing, look for opportunities to do His thing; to be about His business. Be ready for any opportunity to serve Him, to share, to witness, to proclaim Him. Make the most of your time. You’ll find opportunities, because there’s a world that needs Him. There will be divine appointments waiting for you, even today. There’ll be good works prepared for you beforehand so that you might enter into them. Who knows? You might end up doing a counseling session at the supermarket.

Today’s Mission – Look for divine appointments today to be used by God. Take every opportunity He brings.
